At Kids’ Own, our interpretation of literacy is very broad. For us, literacy is about the way in which we communicate with the world around us and about the way we express ourselves inwardly and to others. We believe in the benefit of book-making for children as an activity that develops their capacity to communicate and express themselves freely.
Our book-making process is collaborative and non-directive. Working with broad themes that often begin with ideas of identity and diversity; being and belonging, we encourage children to make art work and tell stories that are reflective of their real lives and experiences.
We aim to raise the status of children’s creative work through professional publishing and seek to make books made by children more widely accessible to other children everywhere.
Spotlight: The Travelling Library
The Travelling Library is a new resource that houses books made by children, and which can be temporarily installed in libraries, schools, festivals and anywhere else where it can be easily accessed by children and young people.
The Travelling Library provides a framework through which Kids’ Own aims to make our books and our collaborative process of working accessible to children all over Ireland and beyond.
With a book-making station, the Travelling Library aims to promote the value of book-making for children and young people; and seeks to build on the genre of books made by children by encouraging more children to make their own books.
